If you have a passion for empowering youth to become proficient readers and enjoy being in multicultural communities; if you have great communication and digital technology skills, this is an opportunity to use and grow your skills as you strengthen and sustain our innovative literacy program for children of color.
Serve with Twin Cities Housing Development Corporation (TCHDC) as a Reading Literacy VISTA in a unique tutoring project at our Liberty Plaza Resource Center. The Resource Center is a community center embedded within Liberty Plaza, an affordable housing community in St. Paul that is open to Liberty Plaza residents and the surrounding neighborhood. We need volunteers…
o caring adults (and older teen) to provide one-to-one tutoring for younger students (Kindergarten to 3rd grade) in reading and for students of all ages to successfully complete homework assignments.
o mentors for teens and young adults seeking their first job or trying to keep the one they have.
o volunteers to add support to PLUS-Time, our after school enrichment program for children in K-4.
o Produce Day helpers to set up and distribute food.

Current Volunteer Opportunities at Liberty Plaza
o Reading Tutors - Be a personal reading coach and role model for struggling readers in grades K-4. Share your love of reading as you engage in one-to-one literacy development activities with children during the 2015-16 academic year. The time commitment is flexible- 1 to up to 10 hours a week Monday-Friday from 2:30 to 5:30PM. We appreciate a full academic year commitment October through May, but appreciate whatever commitment you are able to make.
o Homework Tutors – Use your own academic skills and talents in the service of assisting students of all ages (including adults in GED and post-secondary programs) with completion of daily homework assignments. The time commitment is flexible- 1 to up to 10 hours a week Monday-Friday from 2:30 to 5:30PM. We appreciate a full academic year commitment October through May, but appreciate whatever commitment you are able to make.
o PLUS-Time Volunteers - TCHDC’s after school enrichment program for children in grades K-4 needs volunteers year-round to assist program staff in providing a variety of academic and play activities. The program meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:30-6PM during the school year and Monday-Friday, 1-5PM in the summer. Scheduling within that time is flexible.
o Fresh Produce Distribution - Second Harvest Heartland delivers fresh fruit and vegetables to Liberty Plaza on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month. Low income families come to Liberty Plaza where each receives a box containing a variety of produce. Each event runs from 12-3PM. Set-up is from noon until 2PM with distribution beginning at 2PM and ending at 3PM. You are welcome to commit to as many or few distribution events as your schedule allows. Volunteer activities include:
o Room set-up and preparing boxes. [Must be able to bend frequently and comfortably lift 20-30lbs boxes repeatedly.] (Noon-2PM
o Signing in recipients on 1st come/1st served basis (1:30-2:30PM)
o Distribution- greet each recipient, help them select a box, and direct them in and out of the distribution area (2-2:30PM)
o Clean-up (2:30-3PM).
